Whitehaven was a town built on coal mining. Local collieries were the most remarkable of their era, pioneering a host of innovations, and iron ore of the highest quality was mined nearby. Whitehaven's last working pit, Haig Colliery closed in 1986 and is now preserved as a museum and tourist attraction. Over a thousand vessels were built in its shipyards and important trading links were established with the New World. The town now benefits from its colourful history. The biennial International Maritime Festival has put Whitehaven firmly on the tourist map, and attracts hundreds of thousand of visitors to the creatively restored harbour. The town has lots to offer the discerning visitor, and is situated close to the Lake District national park. Submitted by Graeme http://www.wmvc.co.uk
